Buying used pallet racks may save you some money, depending upon the rack configuration you need, but it can have hidden costs and inconveniences.
When buying used pallet racks, ask your supplier,
- Can the capacity rating of the upright frames and beams be identified and does the combination provide the capacity rating that you need for your loads?
- Is all of the material clean, straight, and free of dirt, rust, and physical damage? Straightening bent upright frame columns or beams is not recommended. If the components were exposed to outdoor weather conditions or corrosive materials, the steel may no longer provide a safe installation.
- Do all upright frame columns have footplates which are required for proper load weight distribution, stability, and bolting to the floor?
- Are upright frames original factory made units or are some or all of the frames spliced and field welded?
- Are upright frames and beams from the same manufacturer or brand such that the beams connect properly to the frames?
- Do the beams have safety locks that properly engage the upright frames? If the safety locks are missing, broken, or if the beams are a mis-match with the frames, you may need to install bolts through the beam and frame when installing the racks. There may be some additional costs for labor and hardware.
- Are the beams clean and free of decals, bar code labels, etc.? If not and if appearance is important in your installation, you may incur additional costs for cleaning and removing decals and labels or for having the beams cleaned and repainted.
